Hamden Fun Facts: Hamden is located in New Haven County Connecticut, and according to Wikipedia, it’s home to approximately 61,000 people. Hamden’s nickname is “The Land of the Sleeping Giant” after the town’s Sleeping Giant hill formation. In 1798, Eli Whitney introduced the modern era of mass production using a mill at Hamden. The main street in Hamden is named is named Whitney Avenue in honor of Eli Whitney, and it runs past Whitney’s old factory. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Hamden saw a large influx of immigrants from Ireland and Italy, and in fact, a large part of Greater New Haven’s Italian-American community resides in Hamden.
